Types of senior care in the Rochester area

Six care types, and the New York license behind each one.

Home›Care types

What types of senior care are available around Rochester?

Rochester-area families choose among assisted living (ALR-certified adult homes and enriched housing), memory care (SNALR beds), base-license adult homes and enriched housing programs, nursing homes, in-home care from licensed agencies, adult day health care, and hospice.

Independent senior apartments without personal care need no adult care facility license. Each guide below explains what the license allows, what it costs at New York's 2025 medians, and how many licenses the state lists in the five counties.

How do I choose the right care type?

Work from needs, not labels: daily help with medication assistance points to an ALR, heavier physical needs to an EALR bed, dementia with wandering to a SNALR, continuous nursing to a nursing home, and predictable help for a few hours a day to home care.

Our comparisons put two options side by side, and the situation guides start from what just happened.

Which care types do Medicare or Medicaid pay for?

Medicare pays for short skilled nursing stays after a qualifying inpatient admission, intermittent home health and hospice; New York Medicaid pays for nursing homes, home care through Managed Long Term Care plans, PACE, and services in Assisted Living Program beds, but not ordinary assisted living rent.

VA Aid and Attendance can help veterans and surviving spouses with any of these costs.
