Adult day care or home care?

One brings the parent to people; the other brings help to the parent.

Quick answer

Adult day care brings a parent to a supervised program for several hours a day with meals, activities and sometimes health services, while home care sends an aide or nurse to the parent's home.

What is the difference between adult day care and home care?

Adult day care brings a parent to a supervised program for several hours a day with meals, activities and sometimes health services, while home care sends an aide or nurse to the parent's home.

Adult day care gives a working caregiver a predictable block of time and gives the parent company. Home care helps with bathing, dressing and the household at home.

What is the difference between social and medical adult day care in New York?

Medical adult day health care is licensed by the Department of Health and provides nursing, therapy and health monitoring, often to people who qualify for nursing home care, while social adult day programs offer supervision, meals and activities without health services.

The state roster lists the licensed adult day health care programs in the five counties; the Monroe County Office for the Aging lists social adult day programs it funds.

How do the costs compare?

CareScout's 2025 New York median for adult day health care is $144 a day, about $3,120 a month at five days a week, while 44 hours a week of home care at the $35 median costs about $6,673 a month.

Many families combine the two: adult day care on weekdays and a few hours of home care mornings or evenings.

Does Medicaid pay for adult day care in New York?

Medicaid can pay for medical adult day health care for eligible people, often through a Managed Long Term Care plan, and PACE programs such as ElderONE build day center attendance into their care model.

Social adult day care may be funded through the Office for the Aging for people who qualify, sometimes with a cost share.

Which works better for a parent with dementia?

A good adult day program with dementia experience can work well in the middle stages of dementia, giving structure and social contact, while home care becomes more important as transportation and transitions get harder.

Ask any program about its staff training, how it handles wandering, and how it communicates with families each day.

How do Rochester families combine adult day care and home care?

A common pattern is adult day care three to five weekdays while the family caregiver works, a home care aide for an hour or two in the morning to help with bathing and dressing, and family covering evenings and weekends.

That mix often costs less than full-day home care and gives the parent more company. Transportation to the program is the piece to solve first; ask whether the program provides it.
